Begum Sans is a high-contrast design. Its letterforms feature horizontal strokes that flair outwards and look a bit like wedges; this is particularly prominent in the typeface’s capital letters. The feature has a long tradition in lettering, which even predates typography: similar wedge-shaped horizontal strokes were prominent features on Florentine inscriptional lettering during the Renaissance. Even though Begum Sans is a display face, its use isn’t limited to headlines. The typeface’s proportions offer possibilities for many kinds of shorter-length texts, i.e., call-outs, packaging design and the multi-line article introductions that are common in print and on screen. Pair Begum Sans with its matching display serif face Begum. Both Begum and Begum Sans were designed in India by Manushi Parikh.

Akin is a monolinear script typeface designed in a single weight. Its letters’ designs combine geometric elements with a retro aesthetic, swashes, and a steep slope. Characters’ sides are straight, giving the typeface a condensed feeling overall. Akin’s design language feels reminiscent of both the 1950s and the 1990s, but there isn’t just one specific style that it cites: Akin is a timeless face, which looks like it could have always been a part of graphic design. Like almost every good OpenType script font, Akin has a lot of alternates. The most prominent feature is the font’s swashes. Swashes of various lengths can be automatically applied via an OpenType feature that reads the surrounding characters – in both directions – and inserts swashes that sweep above or below two or even three other letters (the font knows better than to let its swashes collide with capital letters, ascenders or descenders). Another technical feature in Akin substitutes specially-designed ‘final’ glyphs in for letters that come at the end of a word. Akin supports all European languages written with the Latin script.

Ulm Grotesk is a family of geometric-style fonts for use at display sizes. Its design is so simplified that it feels quite futuristic. There are five weights on offer, ranging from Light to Extra Bold. The characters have been drawn with optically-monolinear strokes. The capital letters contain quite a lot of character; some of them are markant, too. The ‘J’, for instance, is very wide. The fonts’ default ‘Q’ separates the ‘O’ stroke from the tail visibly; a more traditional-looking ‘Q’ is available as an alternate. The forms of the capital ‘A’, ‘V’, ‘W’, and ‘Y’ are reminiscent of the ‘worm logo’ that was used by NASA in the 1970s and ’80s. The lowercase ‘m’, ‘n’, ‘r’, and ‘u’ are spurless. The high-modernist geometric style of the ‘a’, ‘b’, and ‘c’ call Paul Rand’s iconic ABC logo to mind. The tail of the ‘j’ is a simple, vertical stroke. The ‘g’ and the ‘y’ each have wide, sweeping tails – although, there is an alternate ‘y’ available, with a straight-tailed descender. The fonts’ numerals are the same height as the capital letters. Ulm Grotesk is named after the German city of Ulm. In the 1950’s and ’60s, a famous West German design school operated there. The Ulm School of Design was hailed as a successor to the Bauhaus, and it set important impulses for international graphic and product design. These Ulm aftershocks were felt for the next several decades. The fonts are the work of the Paris-based type designer Ilya Naumoff.
