Monarda™ is Terrance Weinzierl’s take on the loud and splashy brush scripts of the 1950s. It’s energetic, playful, and equally at home in hardcopy headlines as it is in interactive banners. In addition to the basic alphabet, OpenType® fonts of Monarda are also awash in super-sized swash caps, contextual alternate characters and ligatures. Drawn for print, the design’s robust x-height, open counters and wide apertures also make Monarda screen-friendly. Monarda can be perfect for a wide variety of food and lifestyle applications as well as travel, stationery and packaging projects. Advertising campaigns and product branding are also well within its reach.

Monarda works best when used large – but economically. Two or three words are its sweet spot. Think: product name, print headline or the lettering on the side of a truck. It could easily become your go-to design for projects that call for a script with a bright personality and fearless demeanor.

The excellence of Weinzierl’s work has been recognized by the Type Directors Club and Print Magazine. When not working on creating new typefaces, he augments his professional practice through calligraphy, lettering, and letterpress printing. Monarda is another winner from Weinzierl’s creative mind and talented hand.

A backstory with a different name
Years ago, I was commissioned to take my Lust typeface and produce something unique to use for large format graphics for an event…cool. It needed to be hyper-contrast with a lot of over-the-top details. With a tight turnaround, I looked for primers within my development catalogue to help me, and settled on some early work on a typeface I had drawn called Hedonist. I used those sketches and its conventions to retrofit and build out Lust Hedonist (only to see the project go bust on the client’s end). I intended to go back shortly after the Lust Hedonist release to finalize a retail version of the OG Hedonist, but I never could settle on the look of the ‘g’ or the numerals, got distracted with other projects, and never picked it back up… until last year. After randomly doodling a fat, flat ‘g’ with an extremely tilted counter axis, I knew immediately how it could be used and that (re)set things in motion. Only problem was, in the process of refining the letterforms I began truly dissecting the pieces, rediscovering all of the recklessness within Hedonist, and decided on fundamentally rewriting the approach to the typeface… literally flaying it to the bone. I’m much, much happier with this finished typeface now, but the name no longer fit the moniker given to the first, adolescent approach—there’s far more audacity and cleverness in these letterforms, tenacious in their resolution now. As a result, the name Courage fit the mettle of this typeface so much more, so I kept it.

Based on a Monotype 1930s condensed poster typeface, Placard Next is bursting with personality. Unexpected details appear throughout the design, from its wedged diagonals and single storey a to its round tittles – which would more ordinarily be square, and mechanical. The warmth and quirkiness of its character really shines through when set at larger sizes, making this a typeface for posters, headlines, and anywhere else designers need to make a statement. Designer Malou Verlomme has paid particular attention to the typeface’s ‘word images’, further amping up its impact, and added some vintage flavor with Placard Next Round.

As well as a striking display typeface, Placard Next’s four widths and six weights – hairline to bold - mean it’s a versatile design, that can be adapted for use in almost any environment. The complete family contains 48 fonts: 24 in Placard Next and 24 in Placard Next Round. It includes a large multilingual character set.

The source of inspiration for MFC Elmstead Monogram is an initials set from the book “Monograms and Alphabets for Combination” by Dollfus, Mieg & Cie, first published in the 1880’s.

We’ve taken the original Cameo styled initials that had a somewhat clumsy weighting and rebuilt the design using the capitals from Marcellus Pro by our sister foundry, Stiggy & Sands. We’ve extended the family by including both a Cameo and Non-Cameo version of the Initials, as well as Chromatic versions that can be layered to colorize the designs.

But we couldn't leave it as just an initial typestyle, so we took it a another step, and created Split Monogram Initials with bar splits & extensions for personalization, with the same chromatic set of layers as the full initials version. For filling in the split, we've created a custom limited version of Marcellus Pro, called MFC Elmstead TinyCap, that contains small caps, numerals, and basic punctuation - scaled down and lined up to layer with the MFC Elmstead Split group of fonts.
